Abstract/Summary:
Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify employees' barriers to using fitness centers at the worksite.;Methods: The study was conducted in Nebraska worksites that were members of the Wellness Council of the Midlands (WELCOM), and had on-site fitness centers. Participants included part-time and full-time male or female employees, 19 years of age or older. Barriers to using on-site fitness centers were assessed using the Corporate Exercise Barriers Scale (C-EBS).;Results: Employees that used the on-site fitness center none to 1 day per week encountered more time/motivation (M=13.3, sd=4.50), exercise attitudes (M=3.96, sd=1.68), internal (M=5.57, sd=2.59), and external barriers (M=5.11, sd=2.35) than those who used the fitness center more than 1 day per week.;Conclusion: The results of this study suggest employees who used the on-site fitness center none to 1 day per week reported more barriers than those who used it more days per week. Time/motivation was the most common barrier participants encountered when using on-site fitness centers at their worksite. However, the C-EBS results provided that participants' encountered barriers unrelated to the questions asked about exercise attitudes, internal and external barriers. Future research should examine specific barriers not addressed by the C-EBS within these 3 categories to better understand why employees are not using on-site fitness facilities at the worksite.
