Abstract/Summary:
This work is an in-depth research project, a full length ritual-theater piece, and a record of my struggles and triumphs to blend these two parts together into the seamless whole which is Living in the Mists. My research into the pre-history and Celtic periods of the British Isles informs the magical and thematic aspects of the play. The play in turn is one woman's journey through the mists of time, as Neolithic Britain moves from Goddess and Woman honoring traditions into the increasingly patriarchal forms of culture during the Celtic and Christian periods of history, and finally swings around again in late 20th century America to the beginnings of an egalitarian style of government and worship. The demands of the play have built the search parameters of the research and the discoveries I have made in digging through the mythologies of the Celts and the archeological records of the British Isles have provided the details for the play and its characters. The purpose of both the research and the play is to create a living tradition of spirituality and theater from out of the mists of Celtic and Pre-Celtic history.
