Abstract/Summary:
In today's rapidly changing health care environment, nurse managers are facing increasing challenges. Maintaining the balance between quality and cost-effective care is an important issue, and building the knowledge of financial management among nurse managers is essential. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a self-directed learning module in basic financial management. Fifty-one Texas nurse managers from hospice and home health settings participated in pretest, intervention, and posttest. Results indicated the mean increase in posttest scores was statistically significant.;The study's framework was based on Knowles' (1975) theory that adults enter into learning opportunities to meet the demands of their roles in life. Results indicated these nurse managers (mean age, 46.5 years) benefited from this learning method regardless of their experience in nursing (mean, 21.3 years) and in management (mean, 9 years), thus supporting Knowles' theory.
