Abstract/Summary:
This qualitative study investigates the validity of photographic techniques used in conjunction with other counseling theories as a valuable therapeutic modality. Various applications involving photographic images for a young boy diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder were introduced to provide impetus for insight, self-esteem, and focus. It was the writer's contention that photo therapy intervention will engage the student and provide him with a sense of personal achievement and raised self-esteem.;An eclectic approach with a strong emphasis on Humanist theories (Maslow, 1952 & Rogers, 1962) was employed. Therapeutic activities focused on photographic self-investigation and self-expression concentrating on the student's strengths rather that his weaknesses. Beginning with the utilization of the Polaroid camera, the student produced images that symbolically represented his perception of the world. Instant images and self-selected photographic images evolved into a book that empowered him to become more self-directed and proved of value allowing him to begin the journey towards self-exploration and personal expression through enhanced creativity.;The therapeutic possibilities offered through photo therapy provided a non-threatening method which elicited interaction, explored personal identity, and promoted and documented positive behavioral change. This modality strengthened the individual's self-esteem and feelings of competence.
