Abstract/Summary:
Hearing toss in migrant farmworkers is a little-known Public Health concern. This study utilized an existing database to investigate the association of age, race, and gender with hearing loss in this population. The instrument used in the original study was a questionnaire, which was used to collect: (1) hearing test results; (2) demographic information; (3) farming background and other pertinent information. The purpose of the original investigation was to determine if occupational noise was a factor related to hearing loss in a migrant farmworker population. Utilizing the same questionnaire, this study also examined demographic factors such as age, race, and gender alone and together, as associated with hearing loss. From the data presented in this thesis, hearing loss in migrant farmworkers may be attributed to age, race, and gender, with the most prevalent loss attributed to Hispanic males.
