| This research project explored how the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) can support nurses to initiate advance care planning (ACP) discussions within acute care. The data were gathered though action research and included a literature review, a survey, and two focus groups. The findings indicate that nurses perceive the physician as primarily responsible to initiate this ACP discussion and decision-making process. Team support, respecting the patient's wishes, taking time to listen to the patient, using open communication techniques, and reviewing of personal values are important and contribute to a positive ACP discussion. The intention of this research project was to inform WRHA in the development of an education strategy for the implementation of the revised ACP policy. The recommendations focus on defining the nurse's role with ACP, engaging nurses in the implementation strategy, and formalizing an ongoing education plan. |
