Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between calcium intake and dairy product consumption with overweight and obesity in 1307 young adults. Overweight was calculated using body mass index (BMI) ≥25, waist circumference (WC) >102 cm in men and >88 cm in women, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) >0.90 in men and >0.80 in women. Analyses were performed with ANOVA, linear regression, and logistic regression. Overweight young adults consumed significantly less non-dietary calcium than young adults not overweight using BMI, WC, and WHR; and there was an inverse relationship between non-dietary calcium intakes with BMI, WC, and WHR. Overweight young adults, using WHR, consumed significantly less low fat milk than young adults not overweight; and there was an inverse relationship between low fat milk and WHR. Consuming low fat milk and non-dietary calcium may help control weight, however more studies are needed.
