Abstract/Summary:
DNA fingerprinting of albino rats is done by Southern blotting using a ({dollar}sp{lcub}32{rcub}{dollar}P) -labeled probe 33.6 and the restriction enzyme Hae III. Different fingerprint patterns are obtained for different strains, with the exception of those that are very closely related. This method can be used in animal breeding centers to check the genetic integrity of the colonies. Quantitatively, band sharing is used to estimate the genetic relatedness between the strains.
