This study examined water use in a cheese plant in order to find opportunities for water conservation in the cheese industry. To facilitate the analysis of the plant's water use, the categorical water uses in industry were used in classifying the water-use data collected through plant operation observations and discussions of operating policy with the plant manager. Because flow rates within the plant were not metered, they were approximated from observations. The end-products of the plant operation observations and discussions, together with certain tasks employed, gave rise to the estimates of the actual amounts of water used for the different categorical plant water uses.;Comparison of these estimated amounts of water use with the literature and the scientific values clearly showed areas in which water use in the plant was excessive and the corresponding amounts of water that can otherwise be conserved. |
