Abstract/Summary:
This study investigates the geometric configurations of jet pumps for maximum efficiency using FLUENT, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program. A geometric configuration is proposed for obtaining 3 to 5 percentage points higher than conventional designs. The efficiencies for the proposed design were calculated as a function of the velocity of the power jet, the mixing chamber length, and the area ratio of the secondary flow above and below the power jet. The computational results showed that this configuration possesses similar flow characteristics to conventional jet pumps with the advantage of providing faster mixing of the two flows with fewer losses. The best efficiency calculated for this centralized annular jet pump was 40% which is higher than the maximum efficiencies published for conventional designs.
