Abstract/Summary:
The growth kinetics of the FeAlZn inhibition layer formed on steel sheets during hot dip galvanizing was studied for immersion times from 0.6 to 1 second. An automated simulator was used to galvanize AKDQ steel coupons in zinc baths (450, 465 et 480;X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy quantitative analyses were carried out on the surface of the inhibition layer, which was exposed by dissolving the Zn(Al) coating. The iron, aluminum and zinc levels of the layer were also quantified.;Atomic absorption spectrometry was used to determine the aluminum pick up caused by the formation and growth of the inhibition layer as a function of immersion time.;Finally, mathematical models taking into account the diffusional transport of species through the inhibitive layer, the chemical reactions at the interfaces, and the partial dissolution of the intermetallic compound in the liquid Zn(Al) alloy were used to calculate the growth of the inhibition layer.
