Abstract/Summary:
The goal of this study was to resolve some management issues related to the use of liquid hog manure in carrot production systems in Nova Scotia, one of Canada's top carrot producing provinces. There is also an interest in developing better management systems for nutrient supply for the use of organic fertilizers. These two factors have lead to the study, in determining the effects of using hog manure for carrot production. Using two fertility treatments, liquid hog manure and inorganic fertilizer, concentrations of nitrate nitrogen and Linuron in the subsurface drainage water and soil profile were examined. The concentration of fecal coliforms in the drainage water was also examined. Carrot quality information was also analyzed in the context of yield, population and colour. For the purpose of this study inorganic fertilizer and liquid hog manure were applied to the experimental field so that the amount of nitrogen applied balanced. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
