Abstract/Summary:
We report a detailed study of the chemistry and reactivity of organic-based gold (III) iodides in aqueous solution. This work includes the synthesis and structural characterization by single crystal X-ray diffraction of forty-eight new compounds that include organic-based gold (III) iodides, triiodides, iodine adducts, and pentaiodides, as well as organic-based mixed-valent gold (I/III) iodides. We discuss the remarkable structural features of the crystal structures that were determined and place them within the context of the current investigations in the field of metal halide and polyiodide compounds. Investigations to determine and rationalize the electronic structure and physical properties of this family of compounds include measurements of the optical band gap, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis by SEM, electronic structure calculations at the Extended-Hückel, CISD, DFT-B3LYP levels of theory, and magnetic measurements. This chemical systems exhibits great potential for development, and we hope our contribution would advance the field and significantly improve the understanding of the chemistry of gold (III) and mixed-valent gold (I/III) iodides, so that one day these or similar narrow band gap semiconductors could be used as components of optoelectronic devices or other useful applications.
