Abstract/Summary:
In today's world, the fast growing internet users produce a heavy workload, while famous websites and cloud centers attract a big part of this workload. It is not a trivial to handle such a heavy load. Especially, when a burst of loads arrive, even big enterprise systems may fail to keep high performance and service availability. Therefore, it is critical for system designers and service providers to take into account the effects of bursty workloads. Motivated by the above problem, we build a testbed of a multi-tier e-commerce site according to the TPC-W specifications in order to investigate the existence of burstiness as well as its performance impacts on multi-tier applications. By using virtualization techniques, we further extend our TPC-W testbed to emulate an enterprise cluster system which consists of a cluster of virtual servers at the Front tier. In this new testbed, we implement and evaluate three load balancing algorithms under bursty workloads.
