Abstract/Summary:
With there being approximately 700 petroleum laboratories worldwide, the need for a robust quality management system is becoming more and more apparent, and organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American Standards for Testing and Materials (ASTM) have provided standards to help them create such a quality management system. As more of these laboratories start to create their own quality management systems (Q.M.S.), the need to measure the efficiency of their Q.M.S. will become very important in their continual improvement efforts. This paper serves as a guide for chemists, laboratory quality administrators, laboratory managers, directors of laboratory quality, or any other laboratory personnel to creating meaningful, key performance indicators for the petroleum laboratory. Lastly, this paper achieves this goal by using ISO 17025 and ASTM D 6792 as a model.
