Simulation and speculation of urbanization growth and land use change in southeast coastal region of China: A case study of Quanzhou

Abstract/Summary:
This study analyzed the characteristics, major driving forces and the future developed trends of urbanization and land use change processes in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China, from 1990 to 2010. The study used remote sensing, GIS tools and statistical models to analyze the TM Landsat Images and time series statistical data. The results indicated that the urbanization in Quanzhou increased rapidly and will continue to development at a fast speed in the future. Built-up land and orchard increased while cropland and unused land decreased. Cropland and orchard will continue to increase while cropland and unused land will continue to decrease in the future. Forestland and water body basically remain unchanged during the whole monitoring period. Population growth, level of economic development and government management policies are identified as the major driving forces of urbanization growth and land use changes in Quanzhou.;Key words: Urbanization; Land use change; Driving forces...
