Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this research was to identify characteristics associated with market orientation of a firm in a former communist country. The Russian forestry sector was studied using data provided by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. Analysis was conducted using rough sets and discriminant analysis. This study has identified some firm's characteristics that contribute to specific market orientation.; In summary, market-economy oriented firms favor market-based mechanisms such as formal contract arrangements and cash-based transactions. They also export a large portion of their finished goods.; In contrast, planned-economy oriented firms often rely on barter and also experience problems marketing their products. Their primary market is domestic, with its easier access to informal network-based arrangements.; Encouraging firm's market behaviour along the lines described by these characteristics will encourage firm's transition towards operation according to market-economy principles.
