Abstract/Summary:
Given healthcare reimbursement challenges that exist today CDI is necessary for achieving the financial and quality goals of an organization. Although there are established CDI performance indicators in acute inpatient healthcare organizations, research has demonstrated that there is little standardization surrounding which indicators are key to monitoring performance in documentation improvement and the frequency at which they should be reviewed. This business problem is the foundation for researching whether project quality management tools, processes, and techniques would benefit the field of CDI. A conceptual model was developed that focused on CDI and the key elements impacting a successful CDI model: leadership, change management, project quality management, and performance monitoring. Research was limited in the area of CDI using project quality management approaches, but a literature review was completed on best practice in both fields. A solution is proposed that supports the performance monitoring needs in CDI for improving financial and quality goals of a healthcare organization using a tool based on project quality management techniques. Application of the tool could be used in any healthcare setting by adjusting the key performance indicators that relate most to the environment. By implementing standardized KPI monitoring across inpatient CDI in the acute care setting, organizations can monitor benchmark improvements.
