Abstract/Summary:
A lack of empirical information exists comparing the rates of alternative augmentative communication skill acquisition for individuals with severe disabilities. This study compared the rate at which 4 participants in a special education class learned to communicate messages using two different methods: voice output communication aid and picture exchange communication system. Social validity was established by choosing messages based on input from typical peers, general education teachers, and parents. Results indicated that messages taught using the VOCA method were learned in a shorter time period than messages learned using the PECS method. Three of the participants, however, were ultimately able to communicate messages using either method. Future research should focus on conducting similar comparisons in more inclusive settings.
