Abstract/Summary:
Once a sensor network is deployed and activated, a basic network infrastructure must be established such that collaborative processing can be performed. The core challenge in the sensor network design is that the infrastructure must be implemented in a local, decentralized way.; This thesis explores several fundamental problems in initializing a wireless sensor network. It focuses on the development of adaptive distributed algorithms for localization of the sensors and management of information flow, including automatic decentralized clustering algorithms, distance measurement methodologies, and position estimation algorithms. These algorithms address many of the key challenges faced in the design, analysis, and deployment of wireless sensor networks and provide robustness, scalability, and energy efficient design principles for practical applications. The algorithms are analyzed under simplifying assumptions and their behaviors are examined in more complex situations via simulation.
