Abstract/Summary:
How Wi-Fi is changing the face of networking Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology is altering the landscape of networking. Wi-Fi is making it possible to connect to valuable network resources from almost anywhere. Users in corporations, schools, coffee shops, meeting rooms, and public 'hotspots' are all realizing the benefits of wireless connectivity. The real challenge for IT is to deliver the freedom of wireless without violating security policies or hiring many of new network engineers.; We have studied two issues related to integrating WWAN and WLAN technologies. The first issue is the opportunistic use of the WLAN network to increase the downlink data rate of a single mobile. The second issue is the opportunistic use of the WLAN network to increase the total downlink throughput of a cell. We proposed a simple single hop algorithm to integrate APs and WWANs to increase the user's downlink rate and to increase the WWAN cell throughput. Through extensive simulations we demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach and showed that integrating both technologies will enhance the user's data services and provide seamless mobility which helps in increasing user's satisfaction.
