Abstract/Summary:
This action research project sought to determine what improvements could be made in the work environment to positively impact the workplace well-being of civilian middle managers in Maritime Forces Pacific. The ultimate goal of the research was to improve the well-being of middle managers, increase their effectiveness and to address succession planning concerns. Through individual interviews with 10 middle managers, it sought to determine the workplace factors both positive and negative that are affecting well-being of middle managers, while specifically reflecting on organizational culture and systemic influences.; The research found that the organization has several strengths including a strong sense of purpose and meaningful work; a supportive and respectful work environment; and a strong sense of community and teamwork. These strengths can be leveraged to improve in other areas including excessive workloads, lack of control and dealing with emotional issues. Eleven recommendations were presented to address specific problem areas.
