Abstract/Summary:
The focus of this personal narrative is to provide the narrator's experience of adapting into the American society. In this narrative, the narrator describes her escape from Vietnam, and the challenge to fit into the American society while contending with a changing bicultural identity of Chinese-Vietnamese to incorporate an American identity. The narrative explores the intergenerational conflicts and the coping resources that helped the narrator and her mother to cope with the generational gap.;This project examines the acculturation process of Chinese-Vietnamese immigrant parents and their children. The relevance of this narrative aids child welfare professionals to understand the cultural issues that arise among Chinese-Vietnamese immigrants. In addition, the narrative explains the importance for child welfare professionals to collaborate with religious leaders and community members in meeting the needs of this ethnic group.
