Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of the current study was to assess knowledge and attitudes of parents regarding pediatric obesity in rural (population <20,000) areas. Knowledge was assessed via a 14 item health information questionnaire (n=19). Attitudes were assessed via a series of focus groups with parents (n=24) of rural overweight and at risk for overweight 3 rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Focus group participants' responses were audiotaped, transcribed, and coded for eight major themes: activity, diet, change, health, social aspects, barriers, motivation, and program recommendations.; Results of the knowledge questionnaire indicate parents achieved 50% correct. Only one parent received a score higher than 80% and was designated knowledgeable. Focus group responses suggest that most parents wish to change their child's overweight status but lack the resources in their communities to help. Parents further recommend that health improvement interventions are free, accessible, flexible, and contain both nutrition education and exercise components.
