Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of co-treatment using both music therapy and play therapy with a boy with autism. Six 45-minute combined music and play therapy sessions were conducted and videotaped. Session transcripts, session notes, and therapist journal entries were segmented and coded using the qualitative research software program, HyperRESEARCH 2.6. Interviews with the play therapist and the child's mother were also transcribed and coded in a similar fashion.;The themes that emerged from the data analysis were: (a) music provides structure, (b) music engages, (c) music facilitates meaningful interaction, and (d) music facilitates a "group effect." The results clearly demonstrated that music was the most effective component in the co-treatment experience.
