| The purpose of this study was to evaluate college students' knowledge of safe weight loss methods, to identify sources they used for nutrition information, and to identify the performance validity of the weight loss knowledge questionnaire. A researcher-constructed questionnaire was completed by 50 non-dietetic and 20 dietetic students. A t-test determined differences between sample groups, with weight loss knowledge. Only 6% of non-dietetic and 90% of dietetic students scored ≥70%. Top three sources non-dietetic students use for nutrition information was the internet, family/friends, and magazines. The t-test identified a difference between both groups' knowledge (p < .001). While dieting could result in better health, this study determined students' inability to identify safe and successful weight loss methods versus unsafe and dangerous ones. |
