Abstract/Summary:
Among understory perennial plants indigenous from Canada, the following species have a commercial value: Actaea racemosa, Asarum canadense, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Oplopanax horridus, Sanguinaria canadensis and Trillium grandiflorum. For these six species, which are of particular interest for horticultural and natural medicinal products industries, we investigated efficient methods of propagation by seeds and cuttings. Germination tests showed good percentage of germination for A. canadense and T. grandiflorum. Scarified or gibberellins-treated seeds of these two species succeeded in germinating earlier but not in obtaining to a higher percentage as compared to control seeds. Results from cutting experiment concluded in a satisfactory vegetative propagation for C. thalictroides and O. horridus without treatment, as well as for S. canadensis and A. canadense following an auxin application. These results show that it is possible to cultivate all the studied species, except A. racemosa , through either seeds or cutting propagation.
