Abstract/Summary:
This study used social exchange theory to address questions relating to adjacent landowners' attitudes concerning three greenways with recreation trails in New York State, the issues that arise after greenways are opened, and how adjacent landowners use greenways. The main objective was to provide professionals, organizations, and citizens more information about adjacent landowner issues and the influences that greenway planning and management may have on these issues. Quantitative data was collected using a mail questionnaire of landowner demographics, attitudes, and experiences with the adjacent greenway. Open-ended questions were used to collect landowner opinions regarding greenway improvements and the planning process. The variable, overall satisfaction, was found to have a significant relationships with: use of greenway, property resale value, quality of life, and total number of problems. Management implications are discussed in relation to the social exchange theory.
