Abstract/Summary:
Important economic changes are taking place in Mexico, and new Trade Treaties with countries in Central and South America have been recently signed. This means that freight transportation in southeast Mexico will increase substantially in the coming years. Therefore, transportation infrastructure in the region has to be prepared to handle the freight flow. Research studies need to be conducted in order to asses the freight transportation situation in the region and how this situation can be improved using the current infrastructure. Research studies of freight transportation in southeast Mexico are scarce. In this thesis research, a methodological framework is defined, and using Strategic Transportation Analysis (STAN) software as a multimodal multiproduct simulator, freight transportation in southeast Mexico is investigated. Due to the complexity of this kind of analysis four products are selected and analyzed, optimization results are compared with current distribution, and conclusions are drawn regarding optimization of freight movement.
