Abstract/Summary:
This research is part of a project with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, entitled Evaluation of Work Zone Strategies. This project is part of the Highway Infrastructure Innovation Funding Program. The final products were broken down into four basic modules: (1) work strategies, (2) worker and user safety, (3) user delay cost strategies, and (4) model development. The thesis focused on the objectives of developing first two models; Model 1, a multivariate decision making model for evaluating construction staging options and work zone strategies based on construction work category, highway configuration and traffic flow in both directions, safety of workers and users, and construction schedule; Model 2, a comprehensive analysis of existing and new technologies and practices related to improving work zone safety including trends through North America and Europe, and their potential impact on traffic flow and work/user safety.
