Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study is to contribute to an understanding of whether the Slow Food Movement principle of a "good, clean and fair" food supply could be applied in Manitoba. In so doing, I identify the economic, social, cultural and political structures that have supported the development of the Slow Food movement in Italy, study its relationships to food security, and discuss whether these conditions exist or can be replicated by the small farm family sector in Manitoba, Canada.; The research approach is based on an Interpretivist/Constructivist epistemology that compares and contrasts how food security is framed by both farmers and consumers in Canada and Italy. I am cognisant that my background and values influence how I view food security, and therefore found it important to research this topic from a grassroots level. Participants were interviewed using a semi-directed interview technique.
