Abstract/Summary:
Real-time database management systems that support real-time applications need to meet high standards of performance and reliability. The proposed distributed recognition-based blackboard architecture is intended to satisfy these requirements. The advantages of this architecture consist of the benefits of distributed architectures and blackboard architectures. Distributed architectures that are inherently suitable to use with real-time applications have the benefit of data replication, which improves both performance and reliability by removing data conflict, and single points of failure. The advantages of recognition-based blackboard architecture include opportunistic event handling, access to an event noticeboard by autonomous agents, approximate processing, and predictability in scheduling.; The proposed architecture is designed using xADL, and is proven to improve both performance and reliability of a real-time database management system over the alternative architectural solutions which are RTSORAC, DiRTIS, and DeeDS. ATAM is used for breaking down performance and reliability into sub-factors and evaluating the proposed architecture.
