Abstract/Summary:
The current trend in mobile technology indicates that tasks achievable by mobile devices will soon exceed our imagination. The advanced technology and widespread use of mobile devices makes them an excellent platform for developing sophisticated applications for image, audio, and video processing. Sales of mobile handsets are soaring and expected to continue. There are many platform development options for mobile phones due to various business needs, customer preferences, and time to market, etc. One can mention J2ME, Symbian, Android, Python, .Net Comapact Framework, BREW, Flash Lite, TagsMe, and Pocket PC.; This thesis is devoted to the development of applications using J2ME platform, mobile to server connectivity and a preventive notification system (PreNotiS) using these concepts. J2ME stands for Java 2 Micro Edition which is specifically created for the mobile devices. It demonstrates that many custom applications for special interest groups and for general audiences can be developed independent of the mobile device manufacturers and mobile service providers. Further it develops a methodology for setting up application software involving mobile to server connectivity which is used in a case study of PreNotiS and can be also used in future applications.; This thesis briefly overviews J2ME platform and specific programming interfaces which are available for image and data communication. It begins with the review of the technology capabilities of modern mobile devices. This review provides a certain justification of selecting J2ME platform for our needs. Then Application Program Interfaces (API) are elaborated followed by connectivity concepts between mobiles and servers. The thesis follows with the issues of implementing application components on the server side. Finally, a new application PreNotiS is developed using the concepts elaborated in previous sections.
