Abstract/Summary:
The term open source was introduced in 1998 to describe a non-linear, self-organizing and heterarchical model intended specifically for the conduct of software development. Since then, it has revolutionized the private and commercial sectors of networking, and introduced many quality software alternatives.;Today this phenomenon transcends to other disciplines. Its most prominent features include abilities to encourage and sustain learning and innovation. While making knowledge accessible, it inspires large devoted and active communities. These benefits are compelling and empowering, and have attracted industries other than the realm of software development.;This project applies the open source approach to the field of architectural design. "As both a process and product(building) of open source development, this project lends support to an argument for viewing open source conceptually and concretely as a source of social innovation in learning environments."1.;Ultimately, the premise of this thesis is not an opinion or a critique of open source but rather a desire to explore whether the symbiosis of open source and architecture is possible, and more importantly, what consequences does it entail.;1Doubleday, Nancy.
