Abstract/Summary:
This thesis examines news about Mongolia distributed by the New York Times from 1989 through 2008, finding that there are more articles about crises in Mongolia, such as demonstration, social conflict or about the elections than about other events. Also, travel, cultural issues and entertainment issues were main topics. The NYT reinforced stereotypes about Mongolia such as "sandwiched between Russia and China," "descendents of Genghis, who once conquered the half of the world," or "nomads who still live in endless steppe riding horses." At least six out of 12 news values, described by Galtung and Ruge, are found in each article. The elite people factor was the least-found news value in the case of Mongolia. Also, reports on statistical and social change deviances appeared, but there were fewer reports on normative deviance.
