Study of voice over Internet protocol in wired and wireless networks

Abstract/Summary:
This thesis studies Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) in Ethernet and Wireless networks by evaluating the major factors that affect the quality of voice in a campus network. The major parameters that affect the quality of voice in Ethernet and Wireless networks are End-to-End delay, Jitter, Packet loss and Bandwidth. The campus scenario used in this study is simulated in the OPNET Modeler 14.5 simulation package and the quality of voice is evaluated by measuring these parameters.;This thesis studies the effect of voice when it is loaded into a 100 Mbps Ethernet network and the End-to-End delay, jitter and packet loss are all calculated. The experimental network is then loaded with background traffic along with voice traffic to study the impact on the quality of voice.;Voice over Internet protocol is also simulated in an 802.11 g wireless network in OPNET modeler package. The various parameters such as End-to-End delay, Medium access delay, and jitter are all calculated. In the simulation, the wireless LAN is also loaded with background traffic to study the impact it has and how it affects voice traffic.;The simulation results in OPNET Modeler show that the VoIP in Ethernet LAN is able to support up to 35% of the total network and is able to support a larger number of VoIP users whereas, in contrast, VoIP in a wireless LAN is only able to support a maximum of 2% of the total 802.11g 54 Mbps wireless LAN network.
