Writing is used to enhance learning and serves as an evidence of enduring understanding. Writing in mathematics has become a part of curricula nationwide. Teachers have embraced writing in math and research shows various types of writing in math enhance student achievement and motivation. The purpose of this study was to understand how writing in math, specifically writing end of unit reports, increases motivation and achievement in eighth graders. The procedure involved teaching students vocabulary, topics, and main ideas in an eighth grade geometry unit. At the end of the unit, students reflected on their learning by writing an end of unit report. The data collected consisted of pre and post-test, Likert scale survey, and teacher journals. The results of this study show that the end of unit report helped students engage with the material, thereby increasing their motivation and achievement. The study supported the idea that writing end of unit reports in math helps students succeed.
