| The purpose of this research is to critically examine the political-revolutionary ideology of Walter Rodney in the context of 1960s Jamaica. This thesis will attempt to dissect the Black Power Movement from 1968-1979 by focusing on the work of Walter Rodney. Based on his book, The Groundings with My Brothers, his writings and teachings will be critically analyzed in order to address the question of race by challenging the national motto of Jamaica, "Out of Many, One People," which advocates multiracialism. Furthermore, this thesis will examine and critique Walter Rodney's three suggestions regarding the position of black West Indian intellectuals and the responsibilities they must uphold. It will be argued throughout the paper that the works of Rodney forever influenced Caribbean intellectual thought, and are a testament to revolutionary pedagogy and the movement of Black Power. |
