Abstract/Summary:
In this thesis, a novel method of cocitation analysis, coined "contextual cocitation analysis", is introduced and described in comparison to traditional methods of cocitation analysis. Statistical equations for quantifying contextual cocitation strength are introduced and their implications explored using theoretical examples. A practical application of contextual cocitation analysis for facilitating enhanced bibliographic navigation is presented and described, along with the details of its implementation. Based on this work, the implications of contextual cocitation for understanding the granularity of the relationships created between cited published research and methods for its analysis are discussed. The future applications and improvements of the work described, including its extended application to online resources and the published research of other disciplines, are presented with rationales for their inclusion.
