Context has always been one of the most important study subjects in the field of pragmatics.During the past some one hundred years, contextual theories have been enormously enriched and developed. In the past few decades, the scholars from both home and abroad have introduced the contextual theories into the field of translation studies, and they have obtained some achievements. The impact that the context has on the meaning has earned increasing attention. The writer has done an E-C translation of the short story Polarities which was written by the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood.During this translation practice, the writer has done a contextual analysis on the part whose meaning is ambiguous. After a contextual analysis on the intra-lingual factors the writer has found out that if the translation unit like a word or sentence being placed into the context of a text, the meaning of it can be confirmed. The writer has also done a contextual analysis on the extra-lingual factors of the context. The cultural factors and the situational factors are the two extra-lingual factors that are mainly involved in this translation practice. The contextual analysis on these factors has helped the writer to have a better understanding of the original text, and finally get an improvement on the accuracy of the writer's translation. The contextual analysis has a helpful instructional meaning on translation practice and it should draw enough attention from the translators.
