Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapy for people with cancer. This study compared 63 participants in a cancer support group as to their ratings on the Profile of Mood States. The surveys were implemented preintervention and postintervention. Analyses were based on data gathered in 1998-1999. Participants were taught cognitive behavioral techniques in 2-hour sessions during 8 weeks to deal with the psychosocial stressors that people with cancer encounter. Results indicated statistically significant improvements in measures of tension, depression, vigor, fatigue, confusion, and total mood disturbance. Implications of these findings suggest that participants can benefit from group therapy. Recommendations for future research in this area are provided.
