Abstract/Summary:
This action research project, approved by the research ethics boards of Royal Roads University, Victoria, and the University of British Columbia and Providence Health Care, Vancouver, used a qualitative research approach to consider how executive and clinical leaders at Providence Health Care can support interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP). ICP is an effective practice model, but literature about how organizations can support its development is sparse. Leaders recognized barriers and opportunities in organizational and professional structure, culture, and leadership. Organizational practices that recognize, celebrate, and reward all disciplines, team practices, and undergraduate and post-graduate education are needed to sustain the collaborative environment. Leadership practices informed by the lens of complex adaptive systems are identified that will support the emergence ICP with the direct involvement of frontline staff.
