Abstract/Summary:
a This project analyzed the Direct Operating Cost (DOC) per Flight Hour of the Boeing 717. Using cost data from various operators, the DOC per Flight Hour was analyzed from the reliability and maintainability activities that occur throughout the life of the aircraft. In addition to including factors previously identified as prime contributors to DOC, this research added new elements that may influence maintenance costs and is of interest to various management organizations. An interaction variable for dispatch reliability and maintenance cost is also included. The results reveal that dispatch reliability can be a major factor to determine if the DOC increases or decreases when an airplane has high utilization flying hours. Furthermore, maintenance cost has a negative impact on DOC, while average airframe hours have a positive relationship. Overall, this research extends knowledge of the Boeing 717 DOC program and provides a benchmark for engineers, program management, and decision makers at all levels involving future airplane development programs.
