Abstract/Summary:
My thesis set out to explore the idea that choreography and cartography can partner to engender insights into memory and geography, and the cognition required to navigate between the two. My research explored the role of mapping space, place, and time through the union of theory and practice. Scholarly research situated in the fields of cognitive mapmaking, body memory, and navigation was linked with physical research resulting in three choreographic works.Outcomes reveal the inherent role of cartography in the history of choreographic practice. Specifically, the choreographic output which partners this written document reveals responses to "how" we map, navigate, and remember in the visceral and ephemeral experience of dance. Many of the methodologies I employed were borrowed from literature and converted to physical practice, while others were invented by me as author/choreographer. These included physical and theatrical improvisations, task-based experiments, creative writing and sketching, and the use of alternative media.
