The Impact Of Global Value Chain Embeddedness On The Export Technological Sophistications Of China’s Equipment Manufacturing

At present,the international division of labor dominated by global value chain is deepening gradually,which has greatly changed the production activities of countries around the world.International trade theory also shows that this is the inevitable trend of the development of international division of labor.The deepening of the division of labor in the global value chain is the root of the situation of "seeing non-income" in a country’s exports,and this situation not only exists in the volume of a country’s import and export trade,but also in the technology contained in the export products.Accurate measurement of technology content of export products is helpful to further analyze China’s trade interests and influencing factors in the division of global value chains.In addition,in the process of global value chain embeddedness,technology spillovers and "low-end lock-in" are accompanied.Studying the impact of global value chain embeddedness on the technological complexity of China’s export products will help to clarify China’s technological benefits in the process of global value chain embeddedness and adjust the import of intermediate products.From the perspective of port structure,it provides important guidance for improving the technical complexity of our export products.Based on the above background,this paper takes the equipment manufacturing industry which plays a pivotal role in the development of national economy as the research object,uses the input-output analysis method to measure the technology content of China’s exports from 1995 to 2014,and explores in depth the process of China’s integration into the global value chain,the import center of different sources.The impact of products on the export technology sophistication of China’s equipment manufacturing industry.The conclusion shows that the export technology sophistication of China’s equipment manufacturing industry as a whole and its sub-sectors has increased during the sample period.From the perspective of global value chain embeddedness,it is found that the electronic and optical instrument manufacturing industry with the highest technological level in the sub-sectors is dependent on imported intermediaries,especially imported intermediaries from developed countries.The strongest,which also reflects the objective fact that China participates in the international division of labor mainly through low-end embedding in the process of global value chains embeddedness,but overall,China’s dependence on imported intermediaries from developed countries is declining,while its production links with developing countries are further strengthened.In the process of embedding value chain,China’s equipment manufacturing industry is also trying to change from "passive participation" to "active construction".The regression results show that the embeddedness of global value chain has significantly increased the export technology complexity of China’s equipment manufacturing industry,among which imported intermediate manufactures have a promoting effect on the export technology complexity of China’s equipment manufacturing industry,and imported intermediate manufactures from developing countries have the strongest promoting effect,while imported intermediate services have significantly inhibited China’s equipment system.Further research on imported intermediate services shows that imported intermediate products from life service industry significantly inhibit the upgrading of export technology complexity of China’s equipment manufacturing industry,while imported intermediate products from producer service industry significantly promote the upgrading of export technology complexity of China’s equipment manufacturing industry.This paper argues that this shows that the value added from different sources implies the different ways of embedding in the process of embedding in the global value chain,and also provides a direction for China’s equipment manufacturing industry to build its own leading value chain.
