Innovation and entrepreneurship promote the economic and social development and it is the key to the growth of the company. In recent years, the “mass entrepreneurship, innovation” boom has spawned numerous new forces in the market.Newly-established small enterprises have fully demonstrated their unique subversive nature, played an important role in the transformation of production and management methods, and promoted the transformation and upgrading economic structure.Innovation and entrepreneurship are becoming the source of vitality for China's sustained economic development. However, because of the limited knowledge resources of newly-created small companies, they should use external channels to acquire knowledge resources to meet the needs of corporate innovation.Resources are the basis for the creation and growth of an enterprise.Open innovation is the inevitable choice for new small businesses to solve resource bottlenecks. The relationship between openness and innovation performance has become a hot issue in the field of innovation management. To obtain external knowledge, enterprises must first be able to identify and evaluate knowledge, and then digest, transform, and integrate. The difficulties in acquiring and transforming external knowledge are largely due to the balance between the novelty of external knowledge and the absorptive capacity of the enterprise.Absorptive capacity will affect the ability of the enterprise to integrate and apply external knowledge, thus affecting the enterprise's innovation performance. In addition, with the increasingly uncertain market environment, open innovation gradually evolved into a more complex activity. The newly-created weaknesses and the weaknesses of small businesses have caused them to suffer even greater risks of failure in an extremely competitive environment.Therefore,newly-established small companies must rationally adjust openness according to the complexity of the market environment to improve innovation performance.Although existing research demonstrates the relationship between openness and innovation performance from different perspectives, most researches focus on verification of relevance and insufficient attention to the mechanism of the corresponding relationship.Empirically, foreign studies are generally directed at developed countries, with particular attention to large enterprises.Domestic research also focuses on large-and medium-sized enterprises, and there is a lack of attention to small businesses. In particular, there is a lack of research on new small businesses.Based on this, this study takes Chinese start-up small companies as research objects, studies the impact of openness on innovation performance, and considers the role of absorptive capacity and market environment to further explore the mechanism of this impact.Data comes form Global Entrepreneurship Monitor(GEM),and adopts multiple regression and other methods to empirically analyze the effective data. The results show that:(1)the breadth and depth of openness have a significant positive impact on innovation performance of newly-created small enterprises;(2)the breadth and depth of openness have a signigicant positive impact on absorptive capability;(3)Absorptive capacity has a significant positive impact on innovation performance of newly-created small companies;(4)Absorptive capacity plays a partial intermediary role between the breadth and depth of openness and innovative performance of newly-created small companies;(5)The market competitiveness positively moderates the relationship between the breadth of the openness and the innovation performance of the newly-created small companies, negatively moderates the relationship between the depth of the openness and the innovation performance of the newly-created small companies;(6)The market turbulence positively moderates the relationship between the depth of openness and the innovation performance of the newly-created small companies, negatively moderates the relationship between the breadth of openness and the innovation performance of newly-created small companies.
