The major discoveries of modern science and the resolution of major problems often involve mutual exchanges and mutual penetration of multiple disciplines.Interdisciplinary research has become the representative of modern science and the channel of enhancing the capability of technical innovation, which also promoted the development of traditional disciplines.Operatively measure interdisciplinary research and effectively evaluate interdisciplinary outputs has become an important issue of science policymaking. This paper creatively proposed the method of identifying disciplines from co-author's institutions and further measuring the interdisciplinary degree of different disciplines in scientific collaboration. In addition, comparative analysis of this new methodology with the traditional one,(references' perspective)were conducted. What's more, the study also measured the impact of interdisciplinary research comprehensively by combining the new usage data and traditional citation data, which can be beneficial to the evaluation of scientific outputs and programs. This research is mainly composed of the following four parts.Firstly, this paper developed a new discipline classification based on the Web of Science categories, with the combination of manual work and the thesaurus function in the Derwent Data Analyzer text mining tool, each discipline's feature words are summarized to classify the disciplines in departmental affiliations.Secondly, the measurement of diversity of disciplines based on the listed affiliations has been constructed, and interdisciplinary degree of each article based on that has been calculated.Thirdly, this paper established the interdisciplinary model from the perspective of the listed affiliations of authors and diversity of the subject categories reflected in the reference list.According to the comparative analysis of this new measurement and the traditional one,the mapping knowledge domains were adopted to demonstrate the results visually.Furthermore, this study measured the impact of IDR outputs comprehensively through combining the traditional citation data and the usage data(html page views, xml downloads and pdf downloads)that downloaded from PLoS platform. The results come to the following conclusions: different methodologies and indicators may capture different understandings of such a multi-faceted concept as interdisciplinarity. What's more, the results of the research impact show that, usage data showed a significant descending tendency over time, while the citation data showed an ascending trend;Secondly, disciplinary diversity present a positive effect on the usage data and citation data, that is,higher interdisciplinary publications tend to attract more usages and citation impacts in every stage;Thirdly, relative to the citation data, the usage data can better indicate the relationship between interdisciplinarity and the impact of papers in the initial stages(1-2 years).Through empirical and comparative research,it not only provides new ideas and methods for the measurement of interdisciplinary research, but also provide a new perspective to the theory of interdisciplinarity, the decision-making management mechanism and scientific policy in favor of interdisciplinarity.
