The Impact Of Global Knowledge Spillovers On China’s Patent And Scientific Paper Output Under The View Of Scientific And Technological Innovation

As China advanced from the periphery of the global economy,it is playing an increasingly important role in the globalization.In the era of knowledge economy,knowledge and S&T innovation are of great importance to China’s economic transformation and social sustainability.After joining the WTO at the beginning of the21 st century,China continuously improves its intellectual property institution to better integrate into the global economic system and intellectual property institution.The main purpose of intellectual property system is to protect people’s intellectual outcomes,to incentivize people in innovation investment,and to achive the scientific and technological development and long-term economic growth at national level.Under this context,studies on the effect of knowledge spillover on China’s scientific article and patent productions--the 2 main knwoledge products in the intellectual property system,can support theoretically of China’s perfecting it intellectual property insititution and other international policies,and reaching the ultimately purpose of realizing economic transformation and social sustainability.The logic of this dissertation follows “theoretical research—problem analysis—framework design—model construction—empirical analysis ”.The main content and novelties are listed below.(1)Systematically reviewing the existing literatures on the fundamental theories about the effects of global spillovers on the output of patent and scientific article.First,building the connections between scientific and technological innovation and knowledge by analyzing the related economics growth theory.Second,discussing the pathways of global knowledge spillovers based on the theory of externality of human capital and social networks.Third,discussing the manifestations,features,and forming principles of knwoledge network based on the existing knowledge network theory to support the following analysis of the mechanism and pathways of globalized knowledge spillovers.Last,summarizing the measurement theories on patents and scientific articles and focus on the quality indicators,distribution theories,and measurement methods.(2)Analysis the refined research questions and designing the research plan.First,defining the core concepts – global knowledge spillovers,and analyzing the effect mechanism of global knowledge spillovers on scientific and technological innovation by dividing scientific and technological innovation activities into input,process,and output.Second,discussing the forming mechanism of global knowledge spillovers in scientific and technological innovation activities,and providing global knowledge spillover pathways based on disapora researchers and geographic locations.Third,analysis the knowledge networks and the relations between the 2 global knowledge spillover pathways base on the homophily effects.Then,elaborating the connections and differences between patent and scientific articles to layout the importance of using both them in the anlaysis of scientific and technological innovation,and to analyze the difference effect of global knowledge spillover on them.Last,designing the main analytical framework and mathematical framework of this research based on the above analysis.This part deepens the existing theories about global knowledge spillovers from the perspective that labor is the carrier of knowledge.By analyzing the effects of global knowledge spillovers on the input and process of scientific and technological innovation activities,this part also refines the understandings of the theory of externality of human capital,and provides a novel forming mechanism and pathway of global knowledge spillovers,and analyzed the relation betwwen the 2 pathways.(3)Constructing the model of global knowledge spillovers,which take the feature of patent and scientific article into account,supported by the research framework and research design.First,providing four hypotheses of this research model based on research design.Second,building the variable of global knowledge spillovers based on the feature of patent and scientific article,which achieves the purpose of connecting global knowledge spillovers and the output of patent and scientific article at the micro level.Third,introducing other dependent variables,independent variables and corresponding control variables,and building the global knowledge spillover models based on the patent and scientific article,then designing the testing method of hypotheses related to the pathways of global knowledge spillovers.This part indicates the global knowledge spillover sololy rely on the patent and scientific article data by establishing a name-based birth country identification method,which achieves the purpose of connecting global knowledge spillovers happened in the innovation process and the patent and scientific article as the output of scientific and technological innovation at the micro level.(4)Conducting the empirical analysis based on patent and scientific article data in the medical field to verify the proposed model and give policy advice.The empirical analysis is carried out in the logical of data description – quantitative analysis – quality analysis – hypothesis verification – robustic checks.This dissertation finds:(1)global knowledge spillovers have positive effect on the patent and scientific paper output,and the co-existence of the two types of global knowledge spillovers maximizes this positive effect;(2)global knowledge spillovers have greater impact on the quanity of scientific papers than patents;(3)The geographical concentration appears in collaboration-based knwoledge networks of both patents and scientific articles;(4)Knowledge spillovers based on diaspora researchers can situmilate the formation of international collaboration,and the diaspora researchers should be the key nodes in the long-distance connection of knowledge networks.In a word,this dissertation enriches the theories about global knowledge spillovers’ effect on the S&T innovation,the mechanism of global knowledge spillovers,and the related research methodologies.This studies on the effect of global knowledge spillovers,which is one of the key process of S&T innovation,on China’s output of patents and scientific articles,can help China improve its intellectual property institution,practice its innovation-driven strategies,and achieve the reformation of economy and the social sustainability.
