Since the 1990 s,the development of information and communication technology has gradually disintegrated the production process. The international production system has gradually evolved from a traditional inter-industry division of labor to an intra-industry division of labor, which is further refined into a decomposition between different processes and value-added links to form a global value chain(GVC)system.Under this system, countries arrange production nodes in different countries and regions through multinational companies, triggering large-scale capital flows on a global scale. As a developing country,China actively participates in the global value chain, but with the endowment only participates in the low value-added links of the global value chain. As an important way for China to obtain technology spillovers, whether FDI can promote the global value chain upgrade of China's industry through technology spillover while promoting China's extensive participation in international division of labor? In view of this, this topic first summarizes the literature on FDI,global value chain and their related relationship, and based on this, forms the basic logic of the impact of FDI on the global value chain upgrade of the industry, and further analyzes the heterogeneity impact of differences in FDI nature(homotological differences, source differences)and differences in industry nature(institutional environmental differences, factor intensity differences)on the FDI value chain upgrade.Secondly, most of the existing literatures have measured the value chain status of the industry from the two dimensions of global value chain embedding position and profitability. We use the GS index to comprehensively reflect the embedded value position and profitability of the industry value chain, and comprehensively measures the Industry's global value chain status. We found that the status of global value chain in some industrial sectors has improved during the sample period, and some of the value chain status of some industries has not significantly improved,or even decreased slightly.Thirdly, based on the panel data of 17 industrial in China from 2000 to 2014,use the econometrics methods include OLS,2SLSandGMM analysis the impact of FDI on the industry's global value chain upgrade. Finally,in order to investigate the heterogeneous impact of foreign capital characteristics and host country industry differences on the FDI value chain upgrade effect, this paper grouping samples and perform heterogeneity testing, and further use panel panelile regression method toempirically test the relationship between different levels of FDI and the status of global value chain in the industry. The results show that FDI significantly promotes the improvement of the value chain status, mainly through two ways: forward spillover and backward spillover. Moreover,According to the motives,market-oriented FDI has a significant effect on the value chain upgrade, while export-oriented FDI has a limited effect.According to the origin,FDI from Hong Kong,Macao and Taiwan play a more prominent role in promoting China industries' Global Value Chain Status.According to institutional environment of host country, the better institutional environment can effectively enlarge the effect of FDI in promoting industries' Global Value Chain Status.According to factor density,FDI has the greatest effect on the value chain upgrading of technology-intensive industry followed by capital-intensive industry, while has no significant influence on labor-intensive industries.Further, the results of quantile regression show that as the value chain status increases, the role of FDI in promoting the value chain of China's industrial industry gradually emerges and remains at a relatively significant level.
