A Preliminary Study On Terminological Process Of "Bay Area" And Its Spatial Scope Definition Based On Perception

The areas near the gulf around the world have created enormous economic value.The experience of our country’s development since implementing the reform and opening-up policy also has confirmed the importance of the coastal area.Since the construction of "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area" has become a China’s national strategy,"bay area" has become popular word in Chinese academic and practical circles.However,most of relevant domestic literature is based on the case of "specific bay area",lacking the research and thinking on the word of "bay area".The perception and methods proposed for the bay area phenomenon in general sense are also few.In view of the above problems,this paper takes "bay area" as the research object and analyzes it from the perspective of words.In general,this study conducts in the logical order of "problem discovery-objective existence-worldview-methodology-practice".Through the analysis of the evolution of the word meaning at home and abroad,this paper finds that the word "bay area" has always kept its original meaning in foreign countries and gradually generalized to refer to a type of regional space in China.Based on the above problem,this paper puts forward that "the words bay area have experienced the process of terminalization in China".This indirectly illustrates the existence of bay area as an objective phenomenon.In the worldview stage,the perception of bay area is expounded from two perspectives and four aspects of words and phenomena.This paper argues that the core meaning of the geographical terms "bay area" is space of entity which is around the bay and across administrative region on the macro level.The bay area phenomenon is a combination of internal self-organization and external organization.The essence of the bay area phenomenon is "the problem of trans-administrative boundary governance among the cities around the gulf".As a special form of urban space organization,the bay area has its unique expression in four interrelated aspects:location condition,economic development,urban geography and political geography.On the basis of perception,this paper puts forward the preliminary thinking and method of "definition of bay area’s spatial scope ",and makes an empirical analysis based on the area around Hangzhou Bay.
